Back to Basics Tonight Don't Expect a Show

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It will be like eating food without any

seasoning. In a word -- bland.

That's what you can expect from tonight's preseason game

between the Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

As if the preseason isn't tough enough to take for some --

particularly the players -- tonight's game will be even worse.

Since the teams meet three weeks from tomorrow, in the second

regular-season game, don't expect either to show a great deal.

If it's complex blitz packages you want, wait a couple of weeks.

If it's reverses, gimmicks and surprise passes on third and 1,

you might want to look elsewhere.

This one will be football the old-fashioned way: Man on man,

with the strongest coming out the winner.

"It becomes basic," said Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin. "It will

be a good, solid game, but I don't think it will be too flashy."

"It will probably be vanilla," said Jaguars wide receiver

Keenan McCardell. "I guess it will be power versus power. You

really don't want to show much with us having to play them again

in a couple of weeks."

The Chiefs are using much the same approach.

"We spent a little more time looking at Jacksonville," said

Kansas City offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.

"But we're not attempting to game plan to attack them because

we play them in the second week of the season. We're not going

to show our hand in an exhibition."

The Jaguars, 1-1 in the preseason, faced this similar situation

a year ago. In the second preseason game, they beat the New York

Giants 38-16. Three weeks later, they beat the Giants again at

Alltel Stadium 40-13.

Players remember the game plan from that preseason game as

being one that was very basic.

"As I remember it, we didn't do much," said McCardell. "You

never want to try things against a team you will see soon. …
