Camping with the Jaguars

Article excerpt

ON THE FIELD

Play of the day: WR Jimmy Smith, late in the afternoon

practice, beat rookie CB Cordell Taylor and QB Mark Brunell

threw a perfect pass between the safety and corner for what

would have been a long touchdown.

Catch of the day: In the afternoon practice, WR Jermaine Ross

made a leaping, double-clutch catch of a pass from Jonathan

Quinn on an out pattern near the sideline.

Hit of the day: LB Tom McManus, in the morning 9-on-7 drill,

leveled rookie RB Tavian Banks.

Run of the day: All four running backs -- Banks, Fred Taylor,

James Stewart and Malcolm Thomas -- continue to look impressive,

but Taylor made a nice, quick run on a draw play in red zone

drills for what would have been a touchdown.

Who's hot: CB Aaron Beasley, who has been active in practice

this week and who had an interception yesterday; the defense,

which was more aggressive than the offense in the morning

practice; WR Willie Jackson, who midway through the morning

practice got behind the defense in a passing drill and caught a

long pass from Quinn for what would have been a 40-to-50-yard

gain; WR Reggie Barlow beat Beasley deep in the afternoon

practice for a long touchdown.

Who's not: QB Steve Matthews, who struggled in the preseason

opener and continues to struggle with his accuracy and

confidence in practice; the offense, which Coughlin ripped for a

lack of energy; CB Dave Thomas, who has struggled in practice

and did so again yesterday.

Injury report: C Michael Cheever

(back), G Jeff Novak (leg), LB Tyrone Hines (knee) and DT Kelvin

Pritchett (elbow) missed both practices. LB Bryce Paup (groin)

returned and worked on a limited basis in the afternoon.

Brunell said yesterday he expects to play about a quarter and a
