No Place for Jags to Hide

Article excerpt

He is everywhere all at once. It doesn't matter where you are

or what you're doing, he will see it -- either through his own

eyes, his assistants' eyes or an electronic eye high in the sky.

He knows when you are loafing, he knows your every mistake. He

knows if you are bad or good, so be good for goodness' sake.

"My goal in training camp is to be everywhere and see

everything," says Coach Ubiquitous, a.k.a. Tom Coughlin, the

coach of the Jaguars.

Most head coaches, it seems, are either in charge of one thing

(offense or defense) or in charge of nothing. Coughlin is one of

those rare omniscient breeds who is in charge of everything.

Trying to keep track of Coughlin at training camp is like

trying to contain Barry Sanders on a sweep. One second he's

here; the next he's over there. One minute Coughlin is yelling

at an offensive lineman about poor technique. The next he's

yelling at the punter about poor hang time. You wonder when

Coughlin is going to come over to the media box and start

yelling at Prisco for taking sloppy notes.

Coughlin is a butterfly, flitting and floating from flower to

flower and never really landing. Better yet, he's a bumblebee

because many times he leaves a stinging message before flapping

away.

"He's always buzzing in your ear," offensive tackle Leon Searcy

says. "It doesn't matter whether you're a rookie or a veteran,

you hear the buzzing. He doesn't allow you to be complacent for

one minute."

Coughlin is always on the move, going from station to station,

observing, appraising, instructing. He constantly pulls a

folded-up sheet of paper from the back pocket of his coaching

shorts and jots down notes to himself.

"As I cruise, I write," he says.

Can you imagine? Your whole life, your whole future, all your

hopes and dreams riding on a scribbled notation in the coach's

back pocket? …
