Girls' Soccer Team Finishes Well

The Clay County United 18-and-under girls club soccer team

finished its season third in the state after losing to

eventual state champion Country side Lighting in the state cup

earlier this month.

Chip Chadwell, in his fourth year as coach, said the team had a

good spring, finishing with a 27-5-3 record. Chadwell said

United is a team made up of 18 are high school juniors and

seniors. He said the team has a fall season and a spring season,

which usually begins after the high school soccer season is

over.

Chadwell said one of the highlights of the season was the team

winning its bracket in the Junior Orange Bowl tournament held in

Miami at the end of December.

"The tournament is the largest all-girls club tournament held

in the Southeast," he said. "Teams come from Colorado, Texas,

New Jersey and all over to play."

Chadwell said one of the benefits of playing in the tournament

is that college coaches are able to scout several club teams in

one location for possible recruits.

Six players from Clay received scholarships this year: Sarah

D'Antonio (South Carolina), Kate Bowles (Boise State), Katie

Poff (University of North Florida), Jill Veitch (Southern

Mississippi), Mary Lisec (University of Miami) and Melissa

Kauffman (Lee University, Dayton, Tenn.).

Chadwell said he enjoys seeing the girls receive scholarships.

"We work as a team to try and help every girl who has a desire

to go to college," he said. "I get a list of potential colleges

from the girls, then I make some phone calls to let the coaches

know our girls are interested. …
