With fires forcing the mass evacuation of a neighboring county,

the family of a teenager suffering from inoperable brain tumors

withdrew a request for a special fireworks show.

Michael Roedl, 14, who lives with his parents in the Cincinnati

area, had been looking forward to Fourth of July fireworks over

Lake Winnott in western Putnam County. They are visiting his

uncle, Rick Shock, who has a home at the lake.

Shock pulled the permit request during a special county

commissioners' meeting yesterday in Palatka after fire and

public safety officials outlined potential hazards. Putnam is

just to the west of Flagler County, where nearly 40,000

residents were under a mandatory evacuation yesterday because of


"I listened to comments pro and con and decided to take the

pressure off the county commissioners because it is a no-win

situation," Shock said later from his home near Melrose.


Before they fled their home in Brevard County, Catherine and

Danny Goodrich managed to grab a suitcase of clothes, a box of

photos and a stuffed deer head. A fire tore through their

double-wide mobile home near Scottsmoor overnight, leaving

behind a charred metal frame.

As they toured the debris Thursday, they found the blackened

bones of their 12-year-old dog, Murder, nestled on the remains

of their bed.

At a Lil' Champ store south of Palatka on U.S. 17, the parking

lot was filled with people. There were no tears, no laughter.

People just seemed stunned, trying to figure out where they
