Shields Records Second 300 but Falls Short of 800 Mark

Article excerpt

After 28 years of bowling without reaching a 300, Paul Shields

has now reached the magic number twice in the last four months.

His second one came during competition in the Monday Night Trio

League at Phoenix Lanes. He started with a 227 game, well above

his average.

In the second game, Shields got his second 300.

He was relaxed and rolling the ball well. Also, by his own

admission, he had a good groove on the lane to work with in

order to get the ball in the pocket.

Shields got a break on the first ball in the final frame, as it

was a light mixing strike. On the 11th shot, Shields stayed

relaxed and buried the ball in the pocket for the strike. On the

final shot, Shields got another break, as he set the ball out

wide and it came back up light on the headpin, mixing the pins

and taking out the 5-7 combination for the strike.

After rolling the 300, Shields started the final game with the

front four strikes. At this point, Shields knew he had a good

shot at an 800 series.

"I've never had an 800 series, and I really wanted to shoot

it," he said later.

Shields had to settle for spares in the seventh, eighth and

ninth frames before striking out in the final frame for a 235

game and a 762 series on the night.

In addition to the pair of 300 games, Shields also has a pair

of 299 games, one 298 and a 296 game in which he rolled his high

series of his career, a 797.

STACK ROLLS FIRST 700 -- Connie Stack recently rolled her

first 700 series in the Paris and Squares League at Phoenix

Lanes. The right-hander rolled games of 247, 256 and 200 for a

703 series.

After not bowling for about 20 years, Stack has only been back

in the game about three years.

Stack, whose father, Steve Corrigan, is a long-time

Jacksonville bowler, admitted that she really got nervous in the

final frame of the third game, knowing that she had to have at

least a spare and good count to put her over the 700 mark. …
