"We're trying to give them a hands-on learning experience, show

them a day in the life of a biologist."

Federal budget cuts are resulting in the elimination of 200

civilian jobs at Fort Benning's infantry training facility.

Fort Benning's civilian personnel officer, Kathleen Kenna ,

said the job eliminations have to take place by the end of the

fiscal year, which is Sept. 30.

She said the post was told last year to trim 66 positions by

the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, the post's parent

organization. Then last fall, the Pentagon's Quadrennial Defense

Review called for another 134 cuts.

"People are quite concerned, of course," she said. "But

everyone was aware that cuts were coming again this year. . . .

We told everybody of the spaces we had to eliminate. But it

would have been easier to deal with had the QDR [Quadrennial

Defense Review] cuts not come along."

Kenna said civilian employees whose jobs will be targeted

should receive notification by the end of the week. The base

will be offering severance pay to employees wanting to retire

and looking to fill a number of vacant post positions by

shifting some employees into other jobs, Kenna said. Most of the

jobs that will be eliminated are administrative, she said.
