"We don't encourage students to bring pythons to class. That was

just a one-time educational thing."

brought a snake to class for a feeding demonstration. Story on

A 13-year-old boy who last month threatened to kill students and

teachers at a Cherokee County elementary school was sentenced

Thursday to up to two years in juvenile detention.

"I hope you will begin to realize you cannot solve your

problems with violence," Judge Jackson Harris of Cherokee

Juvenile Court told the sixth-grader, who has been in a youth

detention center since his May 29 arrest.

The boy admitted making threats on a school bus on the morning

of May 27. Word of those threats created a panic at the school,

and more than 200 children stayed home.

When several students told the driver taking them to R.M. Moore

Elementary School what the boy had done, the boy cursed

"everyone on the bus" and threatened to kill several children

who told on him, police said.

The mother of a Moore Elementary student called investigators

later that day to say the boy had also "threatened to take a gun

to school and shoot people."

The judge said he will recommend that the state Department of

Juvenile Justice enroll the boy in anger management therapy and

that he remain in a juvenile facility rather than be returned

"It is the court's opinion that longterm treatment is in the

child's best interest," Harris said.
