Data Needed in Weather Reports on Hurricanes, Pollen, Pollution

Article excerpt

Since there are no major controversies this week, let's review

some good suggestions from readers that I endorse.

The following items are in no particular order of priority.

Daily pollution report

A reader noted that the Times-Union recently wrote a news story

on an increase in air pollution. Yet there is no daily pollution

report on the A-2 weather page. Instead, readers are referred to

an Internet site. Well, the Web site is great, but a daily

pollution report should be in the paper.

Expanded box scores

Many other metro papers have added comprehensive baseball box

scores, which include seasonal averages. This is a matter of

getting more space.

Hurricane watch, pollen count

Two other items that belong on the weather page are seasonal.

Now that hurricane season has started, a hurricane watch belongs

on A-2. And pollen counts, at least during the peak times, would

be useful for allergy sufferers.

Longer NASCAR results

Several readers have noticed that auto racing lists sometimes

get cut short as compared to golf results, for example. Auto

racing is big enough in this area to deserve first-rate

coverage.

Better festival lists

We have just ended a busy time of year for festivals, yet

coverage in the Weekend section on Friday has been spotty.

Readers should be able to rely on the Times-Union to provide

lists of festivals so they can plan their activities.

Use Jacksonville Beach as a key tide

Since the tide format was changed on A-2, Fernandina Beach and

Mayport have been used as the base tides. Yet more readers can

relate to Jacksonville Beach. By the way, the Jacksonville Beach

tides were added to the front page of the Shorelines section

received by Duval and Ponte Vedra Beach readers.

More details on the five-day forecasts

Weather forecasts can be vague. Including the percentage

chances of rain would be helpful. …
