Local Bands Will Be Rockin' for Guitar Redd's Recovery

Article excerpt

When rhythm and blues musician Guitar Redd took a friend's

motorcycle out for a test spin in April, he thought he was the

one in control.

"I was expecting to give it a ride," cracked Redd (a.k.a.

Herman Gissendanner), currently recovering from a broken back

and punctured aorta at Specialty Hospital of Jacksonville. "It

Redd is currently paralyzed from the chest down. Still in good

Beach. The concert, which featured local artists like

Dovetonsil, Peel, David Gum and Greg Baril, raised more than

$1,000 for Redd.

St. Augustine. "I'm having trouble choosing bands because there

are so many that want to play," said organizer Laddie Dwyer.

Redd's doctors give him a slim chance of ever walking again,

but then again, he has defied the odds so far. "I'm gonna be

steppin'," he said. "They didn't even think I would live, but

you're talking to me, ain't you?"

Unity Festival: When they weren't working out, Jaguars

defensive back Aaron Beasley and linebacker Kevin Hardy spent

last summer wondering why there wasn't anything interesting for

the urban audience in town. This year, they decided to do

something about it -- namely, the two-day, all urban music Unity

Festival, set to run June 20 and 21 in Metropolitan Park. …
