McCumbers Face Qualifying

Mark McCumber of Jacksonville and his nephew, University of

Florida player Josh McCumber, will lead a strong area contingent

at the U.S. Open sectional qualifying tournament Monday at the

Bay Hill Club in Orlando.

The tournament format will be 36 holes and, according to the

competitions office at the USGA, about the top nine players of

the field of 100 will advance to the Open June 18-21 at the

Olympic Club in San Francisco.

McCumber, who has played in 10 of the last 11 Opens, had to

qualify for this year's event because of a neck injury that

limited his play to six starts in the last two years. With the

exception of the 1994 Open at Oakmont Country Club near

Pittsburgh, McCumber had qualified for every tournament since

1986 on the basis of his money list standing or finishing among

the top 15 in the previous year's Open.

McCumber has played only twice this year, missing the cut at

the Honda Classic and The Players Championship. …
