New Fat-Free Chips Wow Panelists

You've heard about them, and now they're available in grocery

stores -- fat-free chips made with the controversial Olestra

cooking oil.

Not only do they have no fat and half the calories of regular

chips, their flavor and texture is supposed to be as good.

So, why the controversy? Eating Olestra, an oil made from

cottonseeds, has caused abdominal cramping and loose stools in

some. In fact, Lay's has printed a warning on its bags to that

effect.

The company also says, "Olestra inhibits the absorption of

some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E and K have

been added."

One serving, about 21 chips, contains 75 calories, 180 mgs

sodium, and no sugars, fat or cholesterol.

How did members of the Times-Union Consumer Panel feel about

eating Lay's WOW Potato Chips? Will the Olestra influence their

decision to buy them in the future?

All but one panelist will buy the chips again. Although

they're aware of the possible side effects, most don't think the

Olestra will cause ill effects unless large amounts of the chips

are eaten.

Bill Kaler, buyer for a wholesale produce company, doesn't

plan to buy the chips again, but not because of possible side

effects.

"I was rather displeased with the potato chips and very

disappointed," he said.

The WOW chips have a thin, crisp texture, Kaler said, but "way

too much salt." However, what he really doesn't like is the flavor.

"The chips don't have much flavor and taste like they were

fried in old fat," he said. "They left an aftertaste in my mouth."

Audrey Kramer said the chips were "a little bit flat."

"It would be nice if they were in flavors with a little more

spice," the gift basket creator said.

Despite that, Kramer said the Olestra chips are "some of the

best I've had. …
