Pair Shares LPGA Lead

Article excerpt

DAYTONA BEACH -- For different reasons and at different times,

Dawn Coe-Jones and Pat Hurst wondered whether they wanted to

continue playing golf.

Yesterday was one of those times they knew they made the right

decision.

Taking advantage of course conditions only slightly firmer

than newly baked bread, Coe-Jones and Hurst both shot 7-under-par

65s at LPGA International, and share the first-round

lead of the LPGA Mercury Titleholders Championship.

Former University of Florida All-American Lisa Hackney and Eva

Dahllof are a shot behind the leaders after a 66, and 1997 LPGA

Tour player of the year Annika Sorenstam, still seeking her

first 1998 victory, leads five players at 5-under 67. Tied with

Sorenstam are Dana Dormann, Mayumi Hirase, Erika Wicoff and Kris

Monaghan.

Chris Johnson, the 1997 LPGA Championship winner, is among four

players who shot 68, veterans Patti Rizzo, Nancy Scranton and

Jane Crafter lead eight players at 69 and Nanci Bowen of Amelia

Island, Karrie Webb, Laura Davies, Helen Alfredsson, Hollis

Stacy and Donna Andrews are among 19 who shot 70.

Twenty-five players broke 70 and 65 bettered par as overnight

rain softened the greens.

Deb Richard of Ponte Vedra Beach never got the chance to enter

the birdie parade. She withdrew after nine holes when her left

shoulder became tight and painful, the second week in a row it

has forced her out of a tournament.

"It was not a pretty scene," Richard said of her front-nine 38

before withdrawing. "I think I have a pretty high tolerance for

pain, but there comes a time when it's counter-productive to try

to play. My mind tells me to compete, but my body won't let me."

Coe-Jones, a 37-year-old, 15-year veteran of the LPGA Tour who

has won three times; and Hurst, 29, took the occasion of their

birdie-filled day to reflect on the fact that they once had

doubts about pursuing life on Tour. …
