A Decatur man who shot and killed a former police officer in a

traffic dispute was sentenced to life in prison after a Cobb

County jury convicted him of murder Wednesday.

Antonio Cochran, 27, was convicted and sentenced in the death

of Sarkis Hazzouri, 38, a former Cobb County police officer

who owned a business near the slaying site.

"I hope people will learn the lesson to avoid any type of

physical confrontation in road disputes," Cobb County District

Attorney Ben Smith said after the trial, presided over by

Superior Court Judge Robert Flournoy Jr. "When you look at this

case, it was all so senseless."

Cochran testified that the night of March 27, 1997, he stopped

his car in a shopping center driveway to discuss his rap music

business with a group of men in another car. Their cars were

blocking a vehicle in which Hazzouri was a passenger, and

witnesses testified Hazzouri got out with a friend to complain.

Cochran said Hazzouri opened the car door and was about to grab

him. He said he fired twice accidentally when he popped the

clutch, making the car lurch. Prosecutors disputed the account,

saying the multiple bullets fired with no warning showed he

meant to kill.
