CAUGHT IN THE NETS Volleyball Teams Drawn to the Beaches

Article excerpt

JACKSONVILLE BEACH -- Hold onto those sun visors, smear on the

sunscreen and put on your game face because today Beach Sports

Entertainment is hosting a sand volleyball tournament.

Men and women can compete in teams of the same sex or coed,

twos or fours, during the two-day tournament.

Beach volleyball tournaments will be bouncing into the area for

several weekends this summer.

A triples grass tournament is planned for April 18 and three

weekends in May volleyball players will compete on the shores of

Jacksonville Beach.

But keep those heads up on May 15-17, when even skilled diggers

will join spectators on the sidelines to watch the Association

of Volleyball Professionals. The city hasn't confirmed a

location yet, but when the association came four years ago the

site was at the Comfort Inn-Oceanfront.

The professional tours attract newcomers to the sport, said

Jacksonville Volleyball Club President Annie White.

"The level of the play and the amount of talent that they see

attracts new players," White said.

Visitors will know it's competition time when they stumble upon

more than a dozen colorful volleyball nets clustered together,

usually at the Comfort Inn at 1515 N. First St. But some

tournaments are set up on the beach near the SeaWalk Pavilion.

The following is a list of volleyball tournaments in the First

Coast region. Usually men's and women's teams play on Saturday

and coed teams play Sunday. All tournaments have the highest

level of play, which is open, and the next level which is A.

Some also offer the recreational level of B, which is noted.
