Church Van's Deaf Driver Missing

Article excerpt

Police suspect someone may have harmed a deaf Jacksonville man

who was last seen Sunday dropping off members of his church.

Robert C. Brown Jr., 58, of the 1600 block of Rutledge Avenue

was last seen about 8 p.m. while using the Trinity Baptist

Church van to drop off other deaf congregation members.

Police said Brown used the church's blue Dodge van, as he did

every week, but never returned to the church at 800 Hammond

Boulevard to pick up his car.

Brown's friends are stunned.

"This is totally out of character," said Wanda Lang Mitchell,

whose mother has lived with Brown for the past 16 years.

Mitchell said she doesn't know anyone who would want to hurt

the man.

"I'm just in shock," she said. "We are totally confused about

what happened. He wouldn't hurt anybody."

Brown is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. Anyone

with information about Brown's disappearance can call the

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 630-0500.

IN THE COURTS

Kay Mora, who first applied to operate as a psychic 18 years

ago, said she was getting her license yesterday. On Friday, U.S.

District Judge Harvey E. Schlesinger ruled in Mora's favor and

ordered the city to issue the permit.

Mora, who practiced under other licensing categories until

about 10 years ago, had been prohibited from working for pay in

St. Augustine under a city law. After failing to get the city to

change the rule, she sued last month.

TRIAL BEGINS: Testimony begins today in the first-degree murder

trial of a man accused of killing an 11-year-old Jacksonville

boy two years ago.

Jermaine Harris, 20, is accused of being the triggerman who

fired the shot that killed Dewayne Lundy on April 30, 1996, as

the child ran to an ice cream truck. …
