About 25 residents showed up at the Ponte Vedra branch library

on Friday to help state legislators finalize the official

boundaries on a map of the place they said has always been and

should remain Palm Valley.

A move to include Palm Valley in the incorporation of Ponte

Vedra Beach angered many residents. As a result, the county

legislative delegation approved an amendment to grant Palm

Valley the right to vote to opt out of the new town.

No official map or legal description of Palm Valley exists, so

state Sen. Bill Bankhead and state Rep. Joe Arnall drew up a

preliminary map for public comment. But landmarks and roads were

omitted that many said should be a part of Palm Valley. On the

other hand, some new developments want to retain their

prestigious Ponte Vedra Beach addresses.

Most residents can't understand why it is so difficult to

determine the boundaries of the area they call home.

"I've been living here since 1948 and I don't see any problem

establishing boundaries of Palm Valley," Canal Boulevard

resident Wilbur Burnett said. "You go right down here, and

there's a road named Palm Valley Road that runs from there all

the way to U.S. 1. You pass a sign that says Palm Valley and

you're in Palm Valley, both sides of the road, all of it. This

community does not want to lose its identity."

Another Canal Boulevard resident, Donald Knight, is upset that

the preliminary map only included about one third of his street.

"From the way I look at the boundaries, my next door neighbor

lives in Palm Valley, and I live in Ponte Vedra," Knight said.

"When somebody comes and tells me that I have to be a part of

something that I don't want to be, I think that's like telling

you you're going to have to change from Baptist to

Presbyterian. …
