Tree Fest Celebrates Forestry

Article excerpt

With numerous timber companies and a turpentine operation

calling Baxley home, the forestry industry is an integral part

of the city.

As a nod to trees and the industry, the Baxley-Appling County

Chamber of Commerce and Board of Tourism are sponsoring the

seventh annual Baxley Tree Fest. The festival, which is billed

as a celebration of trees and tree products, begins today and

runs though Sunday.

"We're right in the heart of the forestry industry," said Lynn

Carter, director of the Baxley Tree Fest.

Bunyan Lumberjack Show on Saturday at the Tri-County

Fairgrounds. Another new event, the Log Loader Competition, is a

timed competition for perfecting operation of a log loader. It's

also scheduled for Saturday at the fairgrounds.

Families can look forward to BRAC, the Bike Ride Across Appling

County, at 3 p.m. Saturday. Bike rides from 6 to 25 miles are

planned on some of the county's less-traveled roads.

improved this year. Tomorrow night's Street Dance in downtown

Baxley will be larger and feature a live band, Carter said.

Families enjoying the dance can view fireworks during the

Other noteworthy events include a carnival at the fairgrounds

sponsored by the TriCounty Fair Board that will run through

Saturday; softball and tennis games; a 5K race; a parade; and an

arts and crafts show. …
