Corps Seeks to Shorten Intracoastal Docks

Article excerpt

PALM VALLEY -- Some docks along the Intracoastal Waterway would

have to be shortened under an Army Corps of Engineers proposal.

The corps wants to widen the required margin from the edge of a

dock to the channel from 40 to 62.5 feet. Doing so, corps

officials said, would ensure adequate space for boats passing in

both directions and for maintenance dredging.

Zach Hellstrom, a resident and dock builder, is concerned that

the strict requirements may affect Palm Valley property values

and limit boating access. In some cases, he said, the setback

requirement would allow for only a 5-foot dock.

He said there are other ways to accommodate commercial traffic.

Hellstrom wants a public hearing.

The deadline for public comment on the issue was scheduled for

February but has been pushed back to April 30 at the urging of

U.S. Rep. Tillie Fowler, R-Fla., who asked the corps in a letter

to widely publicize the changes.

Corps spokeswoman Jacquelyn Griffin said the earliest a public

meeting could be held is May. …
