Change Affects TV-21 Will Now Become Bureau for TV-25

Article excerpt

Brunswick's only television station, WBSG TV-21, is dropping

its local newscasts and will become a news bureau for

Jacksonville's WJXX TV-25.

Brunswick coverage, which had consisted of two 30-minute

newscasts daily, will apparently now consist of relatively short

segments within TV-25's newscasts.

Eleven employees who worked at TV-21's studios in Brunswick

were fired yesterday, and the separate newscasts at 7 and 11

p.m. on TV-21's signal were dropped.

Leonard Firestone, general manager of TV-25/TV-21, which

together have served as Jacksonville's ABC affiliate for the

last 13 months, called the move a reorganization.

He said the eight full-time positions eliminated in Brunswick

will be filled in Jacksonville. Brunswick will continue as a

news bureau with a staff of six, including an executive

producer, he said.

Brunswick viewers will also continue to receive separate

newscasts on the TV-21 signal starting Monday, he said; but

those newscasts will be shorter segments of the newscasts out of

the Jacksonville studios, not the two full 30-minute newscasts

TV-21 had been doing.

The 11 members of the Brunswick staff, eight full-time

employees and three part-time employees, were told they had been

fired at an 11:30 a.m. meeting with Firestone, reporter Lacey

Johnson said. In addition to Johnson, the cutbacks included the

production staff and news anchor Cindi Dohan.

Johnson, who grew up in Brunswick, said the changes hurt the

community. "My friends are not going to have local televised

news," she said.

Dale Broussard, general manager of Century Communications in

Brunswick, which carries WBSG-21 in its cable TV lineup, said he

expects to hear complaints from subscribers.

"I think it has to be a disappointment to the entire

community," he said. …
