It's Wait and See for UF Struggling Gators Hope for NIT Bid

ATLANTA -- The waning minutes in the early morning hour summed

up the final, futile weeks for the University of Florida

basketball team.

The undermanned Gators were fouling and floundering. The

opponent -- this time 15th-ranked South Carolina in the second

round of the Southeastern Conference tournament -- was hitting

free throws and sealing a 71-60 victory at the Georgia Dome

early yesterday morning.

Less than a month ago, Florida was 13-8 and competing for an

NCAA at-large bid. After the loss to South Carolina, the Gators

(14-14) are hoping for what looks like an unlikely NIT bid.

"I don't really know how those things work out," said UF coach

Billy Donovan. "Certainly, we'd like to play. All we can do is

wait."

Although Florida's recent slump -- the Gators lost six of their

last seven games -- won't help, the NIT's priorities don't

necessarily include how well teams are playing at the end of the

season. …
