UNF Search Panel to Begin Its Work June 12 Is Deadline to Pick President

Article excerpt

A diverse group of Jacksonville college students, business

executives and educators will meet tomorrow for the first time

to consider how to select the next president of the University

of North Florida.

The 32-member committee will decide which candidates should

receive initial interviews and advise the Florida Board of

Regents selection committee on the strengths of particular

The regents hope to choose a successor to former president Adam

Herbert on June 12. This month, the regents hired E.K. Fretwell

Jr., chancellor emeritus of the University of North Carolina at

Charlotte, to lead the university while the search proceeds.

Herbert, now chancellor of the state university system, said

last week he expects to receive at least 150 applications for

the presidency, with applications due April 10.

He will whittle that group to a list of 25 to 40 candidates,

whose names will be sent to the campus-based advisory committee.

That committee, led by history professor David Courtwright, will

choose 10 to 12 candidates for one-hour interviews, then forward

a report on the top applicants to the selection committee.

"The primary mission of the search advisory committee is to

make that cut," said Courtwright, who last led a search for a

vice president of academic affairs at UNF.

Herbert, the selection committee and the advisory committee

will narrow the list of candidates to about five in late May.

They will be brought back to Jacksonville for further interviews

with both committees, while Herbert and his staff visit the

campuses where they work.

After the interviews and campus visits, Herbert will make a

recommendation to the regents June 12. They are expected to make

a decision that day.
