UNF Gets Interim President

Article excerpt

A longtime educator who has headed colleges in North Carolina

and New York was named interim president of the University of

North Florida yesterday.

The Florida Board of Regents hired E.K. Fretwell Jr., 74,

chancellor emeritus of the University of North Carolina at

Charlotte, to lead UNF while officials search for a replacement

for former President Adam Herbert.

Herbert, the president of UNF since 1989, left last month to

become chancellor of the state university system, overseeing

Florida's 10 public universities.

Fretwell, who started his career in the 1940s as an English

teacher in Illinois and rose to head two universities, said he

plans no significant changes at UNF. He said he wants to

continue relationships that UNF and Herbert have built with the

public school system and other Jacksonville colleges.

The regents hope to have a permanent president at the Southside

campus in July or early August, Herbert said.

"The biggest challenge is to see what I can contribute in a

short period of time," Fretwell said. ". . . One of my greatest

challenges is to not foul things up because things seem to be

going well."

Herbert, who recommended Fretwell for the job, said he wanted

to hire an interim president from outside UNF to avoid

disrupting the school's day-to-day operations. Among other

things, UNF administrators are preparing for an accreditation

review next year -- a detailed process that involves evaluating

various parts of the university.

"What we want is strong, stable leadership during a period of

transition," Herbert said.

The Board of Regents has formed a seven-member committee, headed

by Regent Gwendolyn McLin of Okahumpka, to oversee the national

search for a president. Next week, it also plans to name a 32to

34-member committee made up of Jacksonville and UNF

Herbert said the local committee will screen candidates and

help come up with a list of finalists. …
