The family of Tommy Scroggie held out hope he may still be alive

six days after he jumped into a Ponte Vedra Beach retention pond

running from police.

Even after police came to their Jacksonville home Thursday

night to tell them that in all likelihood it was their

15-year-old son they found in the pond, there was still a

glimmer of hope left.

"There was still that little bit, that maybe, maybe it's not

him," his mother Denise Scroggie said. "We held on to the end."

Yesterday that hope completely vanished.

Tommy Scroggie, an Englewood High student, was identified by

his parents around 1 p.m. yesterday. The medical examiner ruled

his death a drowning.

Scroggie and two other teens jumped into the pond behind The

Shoppes of Ponte Vedra on Florida A1A shortly before midnight

Jan. 3. They were being chased by police called to an attempted

burglary in the shopping plaza.

The other youths were caught by police after climbing out of

the water, but Scroggie never surfaced. …
