Arkansas Had a `Hold' on Clay Slaying Suspect

John Calvin Taylor II should have been in an Arkansas prison

this week, serving time for a parole violation, corrections

officials in two states said yesterday.

Instead, Taylor is in the Clay County jail after being charged

Wednesday with killing Shannon Holzer, a popular St. Johns

County store manager, while she was driving to make a bank

deposit in Green Cove Springs.

Holzer's body was found Wednesday morning near her red Mustang

on a logging road south of Green Cove Springs. The 30-year-old

mother was stabbed repeatedly in the chest, according to autopsy

results released yesterday.

Taylor, 37, should be in an Arkansas prison for violating his

1993 parole on a sentence for aggravated robbery, burglary and

theft, corrections officials said.

"He, in theory, should be here, locked up," said George Brewer,

spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Corrections in Little

Rock. "I don't know how he slipped through. Somewhere, something

happened."

What happened, though, officials still are trying to determine.

Taylor moved to western St. Johns County in April, shortly

after his release from an Arizona prison where he had served

time on a burglary charge.

Arizona prison officials had planned to return Taylor to

Arkansas to continue serving time there but released him instead

at the request of an Arkansas deputy, said Camilla Strongin,

spokeswoman for the Arizona Corrections Department. Police and

court officials in Arkansas were at a loss yesterday to explain

that request.

Taylor lives on Palmo Fish Camp Road, not far from Buddy Boy's

Kountry Korner, a country-style general store that Holzer

managed for her father on Florida 13 near Colee Cove. Taylor

befriended Holzer at the store, her relatives said. He asked her
