Defense Gives Green First Win at UNF

North Florida used a late defensive stand and got its first win

under new coach Sidney Green last night.

The Ospreys held Augusta State to just six points in a

three-minute span late in the second half and beat the visiting

Jaguars 87-80 at the UNF Arena in a Peach Belt Athletic

Conference game.

"I told them inside we got that big gorilla off our back,"

Green said. "Now we can go ahead and take care of business with

Fresno State [at the Coors Light Classic Dec. 22-23 in Fresno,

Calif.]"

While the UNF defense was stifling Augusta State, the offense

outscored the Jaguars 20-12 in the final five minutes to give

Green his first victory. Jamaal Williams led the final push,

scoring nine points -- seven from the free-throw line. His two

free throws with 3:10 to play gave UNF (1-2, 1-1) the lead for

good.

By the time Augusta State's Demetric Taylor hit a 3-pointer

with 1:39 to play, UNF led 79-74. The Jaguars (1-6, 0-2) got two

more late 3-pointers from Taylor and Leon Brunson, but dunks by

Williams and Cory Caplinger sealed the victory. …
