WHO REMEMBERS '95?

Justifiably, much has been made of Virginia's 33-28 win over

Florida State at Scott Stadium in 1995. "Other teams hope they

can beat them. We know we can beat them," said Virginia FS

Anthony Poindexter. "That's the edge we have." Poindexter had

better look around. The junior All-America candidate is the lone

holdover starter from the '95 victory. FSU boasts six starters

from the '95 loss at Scott Stadium: DE Andre Wadsworth, MLB

Daryl Bush, OLB Sam Cowart, CB Samari Rolle, WR E.G. Green and

TE Melvin Pearsall. Even Virginia coach George Welsh sees little

significance to the fact that his team is responsible for FSU's

lone ACC loss in 44 games. "I'm trying to forget it," Welsh

said. "It won't help us this year." It certainly didn't help the

Cavs that Poindexter was injured on the opening play of the game

and did not return.

OUTLAND-ISH WADSWORTH

Wadsworth, proving himself worthy as an Outland Trophy

semifinalist, terrorized the Cavaliers in the opening half.

Wadsworth racked up three first-half sacks of Virginia QBs Aaron

Brooks and Dan Ellis, pushing his season total to 10, which is

already the ninth-best total in school history. It was

Wadsworth's late secondquarter sack of Brooks that sent the

Cavs' starter to the bench for a night with an injured right

knee. FSU pass rushers have knocked the opposing starting

quarterback out in five-of-seven games this season. Wadsworth

has more than filled in for last year's sack stars Peter

Boulware and Reinard Wilson. Through seven games last season

Boulware had 13 1/2 sacks and Wilson eight.

NEW TRADITION

It may lack the tradition of the famous "Old Oaken Bucket" and

"Little Brown Jug" college football series, but the

"Jefferson-Eppes" trophy is presented to the winner of

FSU-Virginia game annually. The trophy is named after Virginia

founder Thomas Jefferson and his grandson, Franic Eppes, a

three-time mayor of Tallahassee and longtime president of the

Board of Education of the present-day FSU. …
