Hammond Angry at Columnist

Article excerpt

LAKE BUENA VISTA -- Former Jacksonville University golfer

Donnie Hammond responded angrily to comments attributed to

him about fellow PGA Tour player Frank Lickliter in yesterday's

editions of the Orlando Sentinel.

In a column written by Larry Guest, Hammond was quoted

paraphrasing a recent comment made by CBS golf analyst David

Feherty about Colin Montgomerie, and turning it around to refer

to Lickliter's recent arrest for pulling a pocket-knife on a man

in an Atlanta bar.

Feherty said about Montgomerie: "He's not the sharpest knife in

the drawer," and in Guest's column, Hammond is quoted: "He's

[Lickliter] a great guy, but it's like what David Feherty said

[about Montgomerie]."

Hammond said Guest was in the locker room when he and several

other pros were discussing Montgomerie's recent comments during

the Ryder Cup about members of the U.S. team. Hammond said he

did repeat Feherty's quote about Montgomerie, but was not

discussing it with Lickliter's arrest in mind.

"I did not use David's words to comment on Frank," said

Hammond, who now lives in suburban Orlando and is 5-under-par

139 after yesterday's second round of the Walt Disney

World/Oldsmobile Classic. "That connection was drawn by Larry.

As I've finally learned, when you talk to Larry Guest, your

words don't always come out the same way in the newspaper."

GOOD MEMORIES -- Len Mattiace said he has some positive

vibrations going this week at the Disney Classic, thanks to his

victory last December in the Compaq World Putting Championship

at Bonnet Creek, another Disney course across the road from the

Classic sites.

"I do feel comfortable on the greens here because of that,"

said Mattiace, the Ponte Vedra Beach resident who is tied for

second at the halfway point. …
