Recognition for Businesses That Recycle

Article excerpt

With all of the construction taking place at the Beaches, it's

time to acknowledge those who have tried to do the right thing.

The Right Thing Awards go to those who recycle and/or renovate

sites rather than bulldoze what is left of the traces of

original landscapes.

Eckerd's new Neptune Beach drugstore recycled the former

Scotty's site that once held a quaint motel on a former railroad

site. (In the early '50s, I walked the old rail bed finding ties

and nails on a trail that left from near the motel.)

motocross track and mountain bike center, or a large gym with an

indoor pool, like one I saw built in an abandoned North Carolina

grocery store. A rock-climbing wall could be added and with

imagination, a few more things.

Big Lots and Scotty's redid the large vacant store at Neptune

Square. They deserve RTAs.

buildings into exciting recreational spaces for the forgotten --

skateboarders and in-line skaters. There are differences, but it

is too bad that they are so close to each other. Both try to

offer selfpropelled fun in a good atmosphere.

Pet Emporium recycled the former McDuff electronics store to

get a RTA.

Beach Diner came forth from Dip 'n' Sip. Welcome to Atlantic

Beach and take your RTA.

Sloppy Joe's picked up where Tortugas left off. An RTA to them. …
