The best-kept secret in the Atlantic Coast Conference last

season may have been the development of Wake Forest

quarterback Brian Kuklick, who led the league in passing

yardage (2,526) and total offense (223.1 yards per game).

Despite leading the Demon Deacons to a last-second upset of

Northwestern in 1996, Kuklick's efforts were largely

overshadowed by his team's 3-8 finish.

Considering Kuklick's season-opening performance in a 27-20 win

over No. 21 Northwestern, it's unlikely the junior from Hatboro,

Pa., will be sneaking up on the competition this season. Kuklick

was brilliant against the Wildcats, completing 23-of-33 attempts

for 273 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Wake rallied from a

10-6 halftime deficit. The effort earned him ACC offensive back

of the week honors.

"We played so much better this year," Kuklick said. "I felt

like this year we had the game the whole time."

Three first-half fumbles led to Wake's early deficit, but

Kuklick rallied his team to three touchdowns in its first four

possessions of the second half. …
