Beach Input Sought on `Misnamed' Panel Councilman: Group Speaks for Arlington

Jacksonville City Councilman Dick Brown is still upset that the

Arlington/Beaches Citizens Planning Advisory Committee probably

misleads the public by implying the group includes the Beaches.

And, Brown, whose point is echoed by other Beaches leaders,

said using the name could be misinterpreted.

The group changed its name earlier this year to include the

Beaches. The panel, which includes a representative from

Mayport, then took a stand against the Wonderwood Connector

project, which had widespread support at the Beaches.

"Basically, they're an Arlington group," Brown said. "On the

surface, it appeared that they were speaking for the Beaches."

Brown recently sent a letter to the three Beaches cities asking

for input on the issue.

He said the name could confuse people who aren't aware that the

three Beaches cities are independent from Jacksonville and each

other.

"I think it has the potential of being misleading," he said.

Neptune Beach Mayor John Kowkabany said he is also concerned

about the name.

"I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Brown," he said. "It seems

rather odd that they would incorporate Beaches in their name.

They're so far away from the Beaches."

"It's misleading and it needs to be corrected," Atlantic Beach

Mayor Lyman Fletcher said.

Like Brown, Fletcher said that if the group is going to use the

Beaches name, then there should be representatives from the

Beaches cities on the panel.

"That's not right," Lyman said. "It needs to be accurate,

forthcoming and straightforward."

Brown questioned the Arlington/Beaches name in the spring, but

let the issue die because the debate on the Wonderwood Connector

had become so intense.

"That's what made it emotional," Brown said. "It was an

important project for the Beaches. …
