Macintosh Loyalists Don't Give Up Hope

The joke circulating in Silicon Valley last week in the

aftermath of the ouster of Apple Computer Inc.'s chief executive

was not a pretty one.

Q: Who's on the short list to be chief executive of Apple?

A: Dr. Kevorkian.

Apple's future does not look very bright these days. But Apple

still has one resource that no other computer company can claim

-- a tenacious community of loyal users who refuse to surrender

their Macs. They are helping keep Apple alive.

"I think Apple's products and reputation stand by themselves

no matter who's the head of management," said Len Kaufman,

president of the North Florida Macintosh Users Group. "I don't

think this guy [Amelio] is going to make or break Apple."

The Jacksonville group has about 225 members, and picks up a

few more at each monthly meeting, Kaufman said. It also has a Web

site (www.jax-inter.net/nfmug) and a monthly newsletter.

Kaufman and some other Apple loyalists agree that the company

has made marketing mistakes in the past. …
