Article excerpt

A 37-year-old man was fatally shot after a confrontation sparked

when passing pickup trucks clipped side-view mirrors on

Warrington Street last night, police said.

Sgt. Scott McLeod, a homicide detective with the Jacksonville

Sheriff's Office, said a red Ford truck and black Toyota pickup

hit mirrors as they drove opposite ways on the 3100 block of

Warrington Street about 7 p.m.

"It was really a very minor accident," McLeod said.

McLeod said after the accident, Timmy Scully, 37, of the 600

block of Meteor Street, backed his Ford up about 20 feet to the

Toyota and exchanged words with the driver. The confrontation

ended with Scully being shot once and his truck rolling into a

ditch off the road near the CSX building at 3027 Warrington St.

Police declined to release the name of the victim last night

because his family hadn't been notified.

After witnesses provided police with a description of the

Toyota, the truck was four blocks away at a bar called Cookie's

Place on the 900 block of North McDuff Avenue, police said.

Police were questioning the Toyota's owner last night.

FAMILY FIGHT ARREST: A 34-year-old Jacksonville woman was

arrested, police said, when she broke a beer bottle and cut her

66-year-old father after he chided her for taking too much meat

during their July Fourth family picnic.

Ethel Lee Brown, of the 1200 block of East 18th Street, was

charged with aggravated assault on a person over 65. While at a

family cookout on the 1100 block of Pacetti Street about 7:30

p.m. Friday, Brown began arguing with her 5-foot-4, 100-pound

father, Garfield Denson, about how much meat she was taking from

the barbecue grill, police said.

Police said Brown broke a beer bottle and inflicted a 2-inch cut

on her father's chin. She then threw a flower pot at her

father's 1985 Lincoln Town Car and shattered the windshield,

police said.

Police said Brown then stormed into the house and returned

swinging a butcher's knife at Denson. Her sister stopped Brown,

who then ran off. …
