Kennedy Doesn't Get Rutgers Job

TALLAHASSEE -- Pat Kennedy has publicly said that "rebuilding"

the Florida State basketball program for a second time in his

11-year tenure was one of the most challenging jobs of his

career.

He may be facing an even greater challenge: restoring his own

credibility after failing to land another coaching job for the

sixth time since 1988. Kennedy was rebuffed by Rutgers

University last night, which instead named Kevin Bannon to

replace the fired Bob Wenzel. The 39-year-old Bannon, who

rebuilt Rider's basketball program, will be introduced during a

news conference this morning, the university said in a release

last night.

Kennedy's failed pursuit of the Rutgers vacancy comes just one

week after the Seminoles closed out a 20-12 season with a

runner-up finish in the National Invitation Tournament, the

school's first postseason berth in four seasons. Prior to

traveling to New York for the NIT, Kennedy said he would seek a

contract extension from FSU athletic director Dave Hart when the

two met for their annual evaluation.

Less than 24 hours after telling a national radio audience that

he "wouldn't touch the [Rutgers] job with a 10-foot pole,"

Kennedy interviewed with Rutgers athletic director Fred

Gruninger at the Newark (N.J.) Airport Tuesday morning,

according to a story in the Newark Star-Ledger.

"The only reason I had an interest [in Rutgers] is they were

talking a 10-year deal," Kennedy said last night. "Any coach who

doesn't look out for his job security would be a fool."

The "10-foot pole" comment was made on Monday's nationally

syndicated Fabulous Sports Babe show. It came just three days

after Kennedy told the Orlando Sentinel: "I'm not touching

anything, not even with a 10-foot pole. …
