Chart the Stars in `Starry Nights'

Article excerpt

Country, soul and jazz highlight the lineup for the Jacksonville

Symphony Orchestra's "Starry Nights" series, which will run from

May 9 through June 6 at Metropolitan Park.

Country star Glenn Campbell and soul luminary Gladys Knight are

the first two entries in the series, on May 9 and 23,

respectively. They will be followed by Afro-Cuban jazz trumpeter

Arturo Sandoval on May 31, and old-school R&B hitmakers the

Spinners on June 6. All shows feature the Jacksonville Symphony

Orchestra. Call the JSO box office -- (904) 354-5547 -- for

reserved tables or general admission lawn tickets. Table seating

for all four shows are $195, $150 and $130 per person. Table

prices for individual concerts are $55, $45 and $40 per person.

Lawn tickets are $13 in advance and $20 at the gate. You also

can get lawn tickets at all Ticketmaster outlets.

Johnnie Taylor/Ann Nesby: Tonight's show at the Florida Theatre

will feature enough soul to satisfy even the most hard-core R&B

lover. Taylor is familiar to old-style R&B heads as the man

behind hits like Who's Makin' Love, Cheaper to Keep Her, and

the 1975 funk classic Disco Lady. Nesby, on the other hand,

first made her mark with the modern gospel group Sounds of

Blackness, striking out into the solo waters on her recent

album, I'm Here for You. The show starts at 8. Tickets are

$27.50 and $25.50. Call (904) 355-2787 for information.

DJ Babylon: The term "DJ" gets tossed around a lot nowadays.

You can check out a couple of the trade's most noted exponents

this weekend. DJ Kool, who will play tonight at Club Carousel,

is the quintessential party starter, drawing heavily on the old

D.C. "Go-Go" sound. Club heads may remember his 1988 underground

hit The Music Ain't Loud Enough, as well as more recent dance

floor successes like Let me Clear My Throat (released in 1995,

and re-released by American Recordings last year). …
