Palatka Prrepares for Busy March

Article excerpt

March will be a big month for the Palatka Golf Club.

The Putnam County course has two of its traditionally

significant events coming up with the Florida Azalea

Invitational March 21-23 and the Reynolds Pro-Am March 31,

featuring 1995 British Open champion John Daly for the seventh

consecutive year.

The Azalea Invitational is three rounds of stroke play, with

spots still open for $160. Palatka pro Greg Bacon said that

price also includes one practice round, cart and green fees and

breakfast and dinner each day.

There are no playing spots open for the Reynolds Pro-Am, but

the public can get in free and watch Daly and other PGA Tour

members who will hang around after The Players Championship.

Also participating will be 1996 Honda Classic champion Tim

Herron, 1993 Houston Open champion Jim McGovern, former NCAA and

U.S. Amateur champion Chris Patton, and Pete Jordan.

The proceeds raised by the tournament will go to junior golf

programs in Putnam County.

JOYCE SETS RECORD -- Mike Joyce of the Amelia Island Plantation

has won for a record fourth time in the senior division of the

Dave Pelz/PGA Tournament series.

Joyce shot 10-under 136 (par was 73) over two days at the Palm

Beach Gardens Golf Club last week, going 67-69 to beat Steve

Benson of Long Grove, Ill., by three shots. Joyce won by carving

up the five par-5 holes on the course, scoring six birdies and

an eagle over the two rounds.

CLINICALLY SPEAKING -- The third of four youth clinics

sponsored by Coca Cola and the PGA Tour's Championship

Management office will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the

Jacksonville Beach Golf Club. Bob Dickson of Ponte Vedra Beach,

the medalist at last year's Senior Tour Qualifying Tournament

and currently 18th on the Senior Tour money list, will conduct

the clinic.

Junior golfers 18 or younger are invited free of charge. As

with the previous two clinics, 10 names will be drawn to win two

Stadium Club badges for The Players Championship, plus reserved

seating for the final Coca-Cola Clinic March 26 at the Stadium

Course first tee. Defending champion Fred Couples will conduct

that final clinic. …
