With the return of Bishop Kenny alum Kevin Witt and Bolles

School graduate Jay Veniard to Jacksonville as members of the

Knoxville Smokies, a lot of baseball people in the area were

reminded of some of the good baseball players that have come out

of local high schools.

When Major League Baseball completed its amateur draft

Thursday, people were reminded of how that talent level may have

fallen. Only two area high school players were chosen and both

were pitchers. Palatka High's Mike Knowles was selected in the

third round by the New York Yankees and White High's Jason

Hubbard was chosen in the 36th round by Cincinnati.

Other products of area high schools were chosen but they were

drafted from the college and junior college ranks. Only Knowles

and Hubbard were selected out of high school.

Bolles coach Don Suriano remembered when 20 scouts would come

out to the campus daily to watch Chipper Jones, who Atlanta
