Mandarin Wrestlers Head for State School Represented by 7 in Meet; Team Showing Another Year of Success

Before the season, Mandarin High wrestling coach Dave Galyan

tried to convince everyone this year's squad would be better

than the 1995-96 group that sent four wrestlers to the state

meet.

Despite the early disbelief of many, Galyan was absolutely

right. The Mustangs won their district and the Gateway

Conference en route to a 16-0 record and won their regional

meet. The Mustangs also sent seven to this weekend's state meet

in St. Petersburg and with any luck, those seven will still be

wrestling in the finals today.

Those competing for Mandarin are Darrell Jones (114 pounds),

Dane Murray (127), Josh Griffin (147), Jerry Martin (154), Billy

Osborne (173), Scott Boshell (190), and Shawn Boshell

(heavyweight). Jones and Osborne, both seniors, are going to the

state meet for the second year in a row.

"Last year's team had very little leadership. The whole team

was a bunch of little cliques," Galyan said. "You can win like

that, but to win at the state level you need more. …
