Mentor Faces More Charges Man Accused in Boys' Torture

Article excerpt

An Atlantic Beach lawyer used sadomasochistic torture while

beating three teenage boys he mentored in the role of a Big

Brother, according to an 18-count criminal complaint filed

The complaint adds 16 charges to the counts of aggravated child

abuse and sexual performance by a child that Robert P. McKeever

was charged with when he was arrested May 19. Investigators said

they have a videotape showing the 15-year-old boys being abused.

If convicted on all counts, McKeever, 43, could face up to 15

years in prison on each of 17 charges, and up to five years on

McKeever was matched with one of the boys through Big Brothers

Big Sisters of Greater Jacksonville Inc. at least five years ago

and befriended the other teens, according to investigators and

the mother of one teen. The organization provides adult mentors

to kids missing a parent.

The mother told the Times-Union last week the boys were given

motorcycles, trips, clothes, money and other gifts to gain their

trust and loyalty.

Prosecutors said the investigation is not complete, and other

teens might have been affected.

"We would be very interested in reaching any children or adults

who have come into contact with Mr. McKeever," said Assistant

State Attorney Laura Baer, who is prosecuting the case.

McKeever is set to be arraigned tomorrow. Prosecutors said

they intend to ask a judge to review his bond, which was reduced

from $500,000 to $150,000 during a hearing after his arrest.

McKeever has been free since posting the lowered bond May 20.

McKeever could not be reached for comment yesterday. His

attorney, Richard Kuritz, said prosecutors have not released

the videotape and he plans to get it during the discovery phase

of the case.

"We are anxious to get more information about the case," Kuritz

said. …
