FELON REMAINS FREE

Convicted killer David Delk, given permission to enter a

work-release program by a judge, could remain free in Homerville

to work weekdays for several weeks, state Department of

Corrections spokesman Mike Light said.

The state prison system tries to pick up newly convicted felons

within two weeks of their sentencing, but it doesn't always work

out that way, Light said Thursday.

Also, he said, the state could not begin the process of picking

up Delk until receiving sentencing information from Clinch

County Clerk of Court Danny Leccese.

Delk was originally charged with murder in the Sept. 8, 1996,

stabbing death of 47-year-old Argyle resident Willard Jay

Prescott.

He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Wednesday, and

received a 20-year sentence from Superior Court Judge Brooks

Blitch.

But in a move that angered the victim's family, Blitch granted

defense attorney Howard Slocumb 's request to allow Delk to

participate in a work-release program that would confine him to

the county jail only on the weekends.

Until the state picks up Delk, he will be allowed to work

during the week, and spend the nights at home.
