Jon Pate, 7, of Avondale was being walked to school by his

grandmother, Eleanor Chitty.

Chitty told the boy she wanted to walk on the outside of

him, closer to the road. Asked why, she said: "If a car were

to get too close, I'd rather something happen to me than you."

Jon thought about that as they walked along, then he said:

"Gosh, then I would have to walk the rest of the way by myself!"


Federal safety inspectors have cleared a building contractor of

any fault in the Oct. 10 roof collapse at the Cedar Hills

Shopping Center that injured two shoppers. An Occupational

Safety and Health Administration investigation report released

yesterday found Kimmins Contracting Corp., which was demolishing

a former J.C. Penny store, was in compliance with federal safety

standards. Heavy rains and structural problems on an adjacent

roof caused the collapse, the report said.
