EWC Gets 90 Days to Pay Tax

Article excerpt

Edward Waters College has been given 90 days to pay the Internal

Revenue Service $240,000 in overdue taxes, school President

Jimmy Jenkins confirmed yesterday.

The government is seeking back-payroll taxes and penalties for

the fourth quarter of 1996. Jenkins is not certain what the IRS

will do if it does not receive its money before 90 days, which

started Monday, but said he is confident the deadline will be

met.

"I really don't know," he said. "I shudder to think of what

they can do."

Its been a bittersweet week for Jenkins, who has been on the

job just over two weeks. He also announced that the Jacksonville

private college will receive $100,000 from a wealthy benefactor

who is expected to join the school's board of directors.

The donor is Willie E. Gary, a Stuart attorney who has made a

habit of donating millions to predominately black colleges.

Jenkins said he was confident the IRS bill will be paid in

time. Staff and faculty were paid Monday and payroll taxes sent

to the IRS.

Edward Waters has had trouble meeting payroll in the past.

"They [the IRS] are comfortable with the fact that this

administration has started off with a clean slate," he said.

The IRS is forbidden by law to comment on specific cases, but

among its options for those who don't pay federal payroll taxes

are warnings, the setting up of payment plans and liens.

Action may be as drastic as padlocking business and seizing and

auctioning its assets.

"Seizures are our last resort and they are rare," said IRS

spokesman Sam Serio in Baltimore.

Gary, reached yesterday in his Fort Pierce office, was one of

those who helped convince Jenkins to take the top spot at Edward

Waters.

"I had no idea that I'd pledge $100,000 that quick," he said.

"It's a start. I intend to do more."

Gary, who gave $10 million to his alma mater, Shaw University

in Raleigh, N.C., has never donated to Edward Waters. …
