Trucker Cited in Amtrak Derailment Damage Exceeds $1 Million; CSX Reroutes 29 Trains

Article excerpt

A trucker whose semi derailed an Amtrak train faced traffic

charges yesterday as investigators picked through debris from

the wreck that injured 15 people.

Breck R. Irving of Yulee was cited for interfering with traffic

for making a U-turn at a rail crossing on Old Kings Road in North

Jacksonville.

Irving's truck got stuck on the tracks and was mangled when

Amtrak's Silver Meteor slammed into it about 4:45 p.m.

Wednesday. The train was traveling about 60 mph and careened off

the tracks, a police report said.

The wreck caused at least $1.1 million worth of damage, said

Marci Larson, an Amtrak spokeswoman.

The wreck closed two rail lines used by dozens of trains daily,

and repair crews spent the day fixing about $35,000 worth of

damage to the tracks. One line reopened yesterday afternoon.

The wreck forced CSX Transportation, which owns the tracks, to

reroute 29 trains, CSX spokeswoman Kathy Burns said.

While the tracks were being fixed, investigators from the

National Transportation Safety Board rehashed how the wreck

happened. The investigators, sent Wednesday night from Atlanta,

also will study whether any safety measures could be changed to

reduce the chance of future wrecks.

"They take a complete approach and will try to develop a

picture of what happened," said Paul Schlamm, an NTSB spokesman.

It was unclear how long the truck was stuck. Burns said her

company had received no notice that the crossing was blocked.

Irving, 27, couldn't be contacted yesterday by reporters who

phoned and went to his home.

His truck was registered to Coastal Transport Inc. in Port

Wentworth, Ga. Coastal employees there referred questions to a

company manager in Jacksonville, who did not return phone

messages.

Driver's license records indicate Irving was ticketed in

Georgia a year ago for not keeping his truck in the proper lane. …
