Federal Takeover Ruffles Feathers in Tallahassee

Article excerpt

One of the first acts of newly elected U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd of

Monticello caused some Leon County Courthouse employees to

scramble for new parking spaces.

Boyd, a Democrat who represents Leon, Baker, Calhoun,

Columbia, Hamilton, Jackson, Madison, and Suwannee counties, has

reserved spots, usually set aside for county officials and

employees with years of seniority.

When Boyd moves his federal workers in tomorrow, eight county

workers will be searching for new parking spots.

"That's regrettable," said Bob Doyle, Boyd's new chief of

staff.

Boyd wants to position his federal employees so that they can

accommodate the public better, said Doyle. That's best

accomplished in the county courthouse, he said.

In all, the prized parking spaces and a 1,300-square-foot

office suite on the first floor of the courthouse cost less than

$1,500 a month, said Doyle, noting that's a good deal.

Doyle said he appreciated the help of a county commissioner in

arranging the spaces.

But the arrangement hasn't come without grumbling within the

courthouse walls. Why are federal workers in the county building

and not at the federal building where all the other federal

employees hang out?

That's just the point, Doyle said. Constituents no longer have

to figure out the location of the federal building. Now they can

stroll into the county courthouse and get both county and

federal government help.

JUST KIDDING: Casual visitors to the Capitol might be perplexed

by the sign next to House Republican leader Jim King's door:

Ebola Research Center.

Seems the Jacksonville representative got under Speaker Daniel

Webster's skin in November when he commented on the slowness of

Webster's committee appointment process and said making the

selections wasn't as difficult as finding a cure for Ebola. …
