Students Show off Their Videos Clay County's Media Festival a Real Learning Experience

Article excerpt

Student videos covering topics ranging from drug prevention to

skateboarding were featured during the third annual Clay County

Student Media Festival last week at Fleming Island Elementary

School.

The festival encourages elementary and secondary students to

use technology to become better communicators, said Lisa Jones,

the school district's instructional media services specialist.

"We want to have the kids become better communicators using

real-life skills," Jones said. "Through this, they develop other

academic skills as well, including cooperative learning,

creative writing, sequencing, cause and effect, problem-solving

techniques and public speaking."

specialist Janet Hallstrom said 76 videos, produced by 414

elementary and secondary students from 13 schools in Clay

County, were entered in this year's festival.

Hallstrom said the only criteria for the contest were that each

video be done by students only and that the video fit into one

news, public service announcement or music.

A montage presentation of the winning elementary entries led

off the award ceremony, featuring newscasts, public service

announcements about drug use and suicide prevention and a

winning entry from Fleming Island Elementary.

The host school won best of show honors for grades K-2 with its

Everything You Ever Needed to Know From K-1 instructional video

featuring helpful hints from students such as "fix your own

breakfast," "go to school and behave," and "go to bed at 8:09

and you'll wake up feeling good. …
