NFL Parcells' History Hints at Ball Control

Article excerpt

NEW ORLEANS -- His coach, Dave Meggett says, is a man of habit,

which means Bill Parcells likes what works.

So, that's why there are some similarities between the New

England Patriots this season and the New York Giants -- coached

by Parcells -- that won the Super Bowl following the 1990

season.

Preparation? Same, said Meggett, a Patriots running back who

played for Parcells on the 1990 champions.

Schedule? Same.

"He doesn't change his coaching style," Meggett said as the

Patriots prepared to play the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl

XXXI at the SuperDome Sunday at 6:18 p.m. "He doesn't want to

facing the 1990 Giants and this season's Patriots.

The Bills, fans may forget, were not tagged as perennial

chokers in 1990, when the Giants beat them 20-19 in Super Bowl

XXV. They routed the Raiders in the AFC Championship Game the

week before. The Bills were a high-powered offense, with running

back Thurman Thomas, quarterback Jim Kelly and wide receiver

Andre Reed just entering their prime. The Packers have the

league MVP at quarterback, Brett Favre, who passed for 39

touchdowns in the regular season and three more in the playoffs. …
