Marian Wright Edelman, Children's Defense Fund president and

founder, will be the keynote speaker at this morning's 10th

annual Martin Luther King Breakfast.

The breakfast, held in memory of the slain civil rights leader,

starts at 7:45 a.m. at the Prime Osborne Convention Center, 1000

W. Water Street.

Edelman, a Spelman College and Yale Law School graduate, founded

the Children's Defense Fund in 1973 to educate the nation about

the needs of children and encourage steps to prevent child

illness, school dropout and teen pregnancy.

Other events in observance of Martin Luther King Day, officially

recognized Monday, include:

Edward Waters College will honor King at 11 a.m. today with a

program in the Milne Auditorium of the Lee-Cousins Building,

1658 Kings Road. Tonyaa Weathersbee, a Florida Times-Union

editor and columnist, will be the speaker. Versiteers, a woman's

a cappella gospel group, will perform musical selections.

birthday at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the FCCJ North Campus, 4501

Capper Road. The celebration, to be held in the auditorium at

Room C-126, will include performances by Edward Waters College's

gospel choir and readings from King's speeches.

Ahavath Chesed (The Temple) will celebrate the day with Social

Justice Sabbath at 8 p.m. Friday at 8727 San Jose Blvd. Featured

speaker will be the Rev. Jesse Truvillion, a veteran of the

civil rights movement who worked with King as an organizer of

many civil rights marches.

King parade and bazaar, 9 a.m. Saturday, James Weldon Johnson

Middle School, 1840 W. Ninth St., with marchers, walkers and

floats.

Greater Payne AME will celebrate the day at the 11 a.m. worship

service Sunday, at 1230 E. 23rd St.

Nassau County Leadership Conference will celebrate at 6:30

p.m., Sunday at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 10 S. …
