Billy Joe was shuffled around town yesterday during his booster

tour, shaking hands and telling stories, and describing the next

big step for the Florida A&M football program to anyone who

would listen.

A hot coach, a hot program -- with one way to go. Who says

success is easy?

"There are a lot of expectations for us," said Joe, who has won

back-to-back MEAC championships the past two seasons. "The

ceiling has been raised."

The only question remaining is can the Rattlers make the final

step? Under Joe, FAMU has gone from a program mired in

mediocrity to one of the hottest in Division I-AA.

No longer are the Rattlers forced to miss the I-AA playoffs

because of a conflict with the annual Florida Classic against

Bethune-Cookman. For the first time last season, FAMU played in

the I-AA playoffs, losing to Troy State in the first round.

This fall, with record-setting quarterback Oteman Sampson

leading the way, the Rattlers are primed for the next step. …
