Jacksonville's Christmas Trees Head for Compost Pile

Article excerpt

One glorious day you're on top of the world. You're the center

of attention. You light up the room.

The next day you're lying naked in the gutter. Six months

later, you're compost.

A Tinseltown tale? Sure, if you're a Christmas tree.

The 150,000 trees that Jacksonville families decorated and then

denuded are being collected from curbs and school yards.

The pines, firs and spruces will be finely chopped and mixed

with lawn clippings. After a three- to six-month snooze in the

by the truckload or bagful -- to anyone with a shovel.

"It's pretty elementary, I guess," said Jo Ann Carter of city's

Solid Waste Division.

Christmas trees are a big part of the hundreds of tons of mulch

produced each month at composting sites on the Southside and

Westside, said Frank Frazier, general manager of Enviro-Comp

Services Inc., which handles composting for the city.

Dispose of trees on regularly scheduled yard waste pickup days.

Remove all tinsel, ornaments and decorations.

If you don't have curbside collection or don't want to wait for

pickup, take the tree to one of these locations:
