Sports World Caught in Swoosh's Sway

Article excerpt

It seems Nike is beginning to annoy some of us.

Could Nike and its swoosh logo be on their way out, in terms of

popularity?

Or is this unsettling feeling just symptoms of spring fever?

The refrains of discord, at least to some of us, suggest the

swoosh is wearing out its welcome.

I guess this could be compared to the uninvited weekend guests

who refuse to leave regardless of how many times you tell them

the cupboard is bare.

The shoe company seems to be receiving an inordinate amount of

exposure considering the skyrocketing appeal of its latest icon,

Tiger Woods.

But here are my top 10 reasons -- in David Letterman format --

why some of us may feel overwhelmed by the swoosh:

10) It's showing up everywhere, and we still don't know what

the heck it means.

9) Some of us are afraid the Internal Revenue Service will soon

ask us to check a box on our tax return form to make a

contribution to it.

8) The two finalists in last weekend's Bausch & Lomb Tennis

Championships at the Amelia Island Plantation, Lindsay Davenport

and Mary Pierce, wore it.

7) The Florida State University women's softball team wears the

swoosh. In fact, all of FSU's sports teams wear it.

6) FSU football coach Bobby Bowden gets paid $225,000 to wear

it.

5) The University of Florida football team does not wear it.

4) Florida coach Steve Spurrier gets paid about $200,000 to

wear it.

3) The Jacksonville Jaguars wear it.

2) We feel our intelligence has been insulted because we know

that tigers have stripes, but each time we look at television we

a see Tiger with swooshes.

1) We feel left out because everybody else in the world has an

endorsement contract to wear it, and we have yet to be

contacted. …
